Protecting Your Kid’s Identity

kid's credit

It’s a sad day when the identity of a wealthy 70 year-old is less valuable than a newborn, but in today’s ramped up cyber crime climate, all bets are off. Why?–A criminal has almost 18 years to manipulate and destroy the tot’s credit but the older gent probably keeps a good eye on his credit reports and knows if somethings up.

Fortunately, it’s easier than ever to freeze your child’s credit.

A credit freeze hides your kid’s credit record. If you have a credit freeze with the 3 power bureaus — Equifax, Experian and TransUnion — the majority of companies can’t look at your credit record unless they are already doing business with you. This means a criminal can’t get a credit card in your name, since the card company won’t open the account unless it can check your credit first.

Here’s how to freeze your kid’s credit:

Children Credit Freeze Pages

Equifax

Experian

TransUnion

Click on the links above. They will take you to the Minor freeze Request for each bureau. Please note that you do have to send in a copy of their SS card and birth certificate. If this feels uncomfortable, pay a little extra and get a certified letter through UPS or FedEx so you can track it.
