Ordering food online or through your mobile device during the pandemic?

Panic buying at the grocery store got you down?

There may not be leftover fruits, veggies, or meats to cook for next week’s dinner, but that doesn’t mean you can’t order your favorite meal online and have it delivered! (We’re the glass half full type).

Currently all food and grocery delivery services are still in operation. Instacart, Uber Eats, Grubhub, Postmates, and DoorDash to name a few, not to mention pick-up at most restaurants (for now).

There’s been no cases of COVID-19 transmitted through food, or food packaging.

The biggest risk to contracting the virus is through person to person direct contact. Germs can however live on surfaces for days at a time, so (just to be safe) when ordering food, everyone should take proper precautions to ensure they are not putting themselves at risk.

What are those proper precautions you might ask?

One precaution is something the food delivery service is doing for you, “contactless drop-offs”. Your driver will deliver your already paid for meal direct to your door and let you know when it’s arrived, to minimize any chance of person to person contact, even If there are no COVID-19 symptoms present. This works well even for those who were practicing social distancing long before the Coronavirus emerged. Just opt for the ‘Leave at My Door’ option, now offered by all services.

Uber Eats, and restaurant like Chipotle have also waived delivery service fees, be sure to check out which ones are offering free service.

Another precaution is to use the delivery instructions. You can even add photos of where you’d like the food to be placed when dropping it off by your door.

As soon as you receive your food, wash your hands. We’re sure you haven’t heard this enough in the last several weeks (kidding) so we want to remind you, wash your hands after handling just about anything. Including your delivered meal.

Disinfect the surface you set your delivery container on/in before and after you eat your meal. You may even want to transfer your food from the container to your own bowl or plate. (Don’t forget to wash your hands!)

The CDC has also been in contact with all delivery services, ensuring they have the most up-to-date information on food handling and “recommendations for best hygiene.” Door Dash is distributing hand sanitizer and gloves to drivers, and Uber Eats is providing disinfectant for their worker’s vehicles.

If you’re missing out on your favorite foods due to this pandemic, know that there’s no need! Technology is here to at least save our stomachs.
