It’s devastating to think about any person losing their life by the hand of another, and especially devastating to think about that occurring in a classroom setting where children are believed to be safe. Too many times we’ve seen it on the news, experienced it in our own lives or the life of a friend or family member. A silent alert system is in the works in Florida to prevent this from happening.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into action last June, a law named after shooting victim Alyssa Alhadeff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

School Shootings Need Faster Response

Alyssa’s Law “requires all Florida public and charter schools to implement a mobile system that silently alerts law enforcement and first responders of potentially life-threatening situations — from shootings to medical emergencies.”

The mobile system is called ALERT, or Active Law Enforcement Response Technology, and along with the School Safety Grant program launched by Andrew Pollack who has also grieved the loss of his 18 year old daughter, his goal is to “fund school safety enhancement nationwide by distributing grants.”  $40,000 to Police Departments, and $20,000 per campus for School Districts.

IntraLogic Solutions along with other School Safety Grant partners, Actuate and SaferWatch are donating up to $20 million to cover “full implementation, full deployment and all the software for life,” to build existing infrastructure to connect schools to their local police departments.

ALERT gives police real-time surveillance within a building after a panic button is triggered, then dispatchers can track a suspect’s location and relay information to officers.

What’s unique about ALERT however, is that IntraLogic Solution’s CEO Lee Mandel developed it for more than just classrooms, “hospitals, movie theaters, houses of worship and other mass-gathering locations will be eligible,” for the system, and the grants.

Mandel began developing the software after the heart wrenching incident at Sandy Hook Elementary school, where 26 people, including 20 children were killed in December 2012. He asked himself “how can we make a difference?”

ALERT’s software “makes police departments efficient. It takes them into the 21st century of response.” Information can often be unhelpful if the caller is in shock or under stress, this technology allows well-trained individuals to have defined answers and directions.

Shooter description, direction they’re traveling, where officers should enter, this can all be answered using ALERT.

The latest and greatest technology is crucial to protecting our children in every area of the world as school shootings continue to increase, this new technology will mean immediate response, and less death.
